Preserving Sattriya Tradition

Essence of Sattriya Dance & Music: A journey of tradition and innovation

Sattriya dance came to be recognised in 2000 as a major national dance form at par with the other classical dance forms in the country. A living tradition which has never witnessed a break since 15th century AD however faced several challenges as it has made its transition from the Sattra, the Vaishnavite monasteries to the larger proscenium theatre.

Several of its trustees of Srimanta Foundation having been recipient of awards like Sangeet Natak Academy, Padmashree, etc. on account of their being experts on these dance forms in general and the Sankardeva movement in particular, had embarked on a journey of training teachers and conducting workshop in length and breath of Assam to ensure retaining the originality while experimenting presentations to suit the requirements of the present day society.

In addition to workshops , National seminars and shows were conducted in different years which were graced by luminaries like Kapila Vatsayan, Mamoni Raisom, Dr Bhupen Hazarika, Lt General S K Singha, Smt Sonal Mansingh, Shri Jayant Kastuwar and many others. In addition Foundation had conducted bhaona and Sattriya dance workshops in Indo-Bangla border, Nagaland border, Arunachal border in Tinsukia, etc.
